In terms of gameplay, your Class has the most profound effects, with each one providing a focus on Biotics, Tech, Weapons, or a mixture of two. A Custom Profile will let you tailor your Shepard in greater detail. You'll have the option to choose between a Quick-Start profile, or to make a Custom one.Ī Quick-Start Profile will give Shepard their default first name (John or Jane), give them the Earthborn Origin, the Sole Survivor Reputation, the Soldier Class, and the default facial appearance. Once you complete the opening Mission, Prologue - Save Joker, you'll be at the "Lazarus Project" screen where you can customize Shepard more fully. As well, your choice of gender will have minor alterations to the script, although nothing that truly influences the direction of the story. Each gender will have roughly the same amount of options in Mass Effect 2 and 3. Your choice of gender will primarily affect which characters will be sexually aligned with your Shepard and thus receptive to being Romanced. As well, the pronouns will be traditionally aligned: Male Shepard will be given he/him, and Female Shepard she/her. Shepard's gender is locked throughout their journey: it's impossible to have them transition between Male and Female when starting Mass Effect 3 later. Unlike the original Mass Effect, your first choice in Mass Effect 2 is to choose between picking a Male or Female Shepard (or to import a Mass Effect 1 Profile), which is done at the main menu.
